LILI, THE DANISH GIRL

For this unusual ballet evening about the life of Lili Elbe, i created an abstract space with moving walls and 3 cabinets on wheels with semitransparent mirrors. The highly reflective surface of the space has marks like cyphers, images and words as well as a painting of a choppy seascape that creates a fascinating, shining and shimmering space overlayed with a troubled mood. Lili was born as Einar Wegener in Denmarks 19th century and was a well-known landscape painter. She went through a gender reassignment surgery, which finally gave her the feeling of having arrived in the right body. Shortly before her untimely death, she wrote a book about her life that is the basis of our ballet.
